Address and Hours of Operation:
The Texas General Land Office is located at:
1700 N. Congress Ave.
Suite 800
Austin, Texas 78701-1495.
The Texas General Land Office has a lot of information online. I have listed their web site information, along with information about all kinds of scripts you can look into. The Land Office has a search engine you can use online, see link below. Check this search engine to see if any names you know are listed. You can also visit in person. Below is an inside view of the Land Office. You will have to sign in here. The space is limited, only a few tables.
Normal operating hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (files may be accessed from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) Hours of operation are subject to change during state and federal holidays.
If you visit in person, you could find documents like land grants, scripts and so on. You can also order them over the phone or by mail. Check below for all the different kinds of land documents that can be found at the Land Office. However, you do owe yourself a trip there if you can go as there are so many documents and so much history you can discover.
They have lists for all the different counties in Texas. The website, Txgenweb, did do this, but they seem to be dropping this and redoing their sites now.
Now, if you are having a problem locating your lost relative, you could also try asking the Land Office for the original owners list for the county you are researching.
